Afro-Venezuelan Women Drummers
Broadway at 95th St
New York
This concert provides a rare opportunity to hear the African-influenced traditions of Venezuela. This female ensemble performs rich polyrhythmic percussion music on a variety of instruments, including the tambores drums (which are usually played by men). Elegguá, named after the orisha (god) “who opens doorways,” comes from the Windward region on the central coast of where African traditions have long had a strong presence. The multigenerational group includes the 72-year-old Belen Maria Palacios, “The Queen of the Quitapilas” (bamboo tubes), who is regarded as a national treasure. The program includes special guest dancers.
